Hickory High School's award-winning Parent Teacher Student Association - PTSA - is led by dedicated parent volunteers who consistently strive to improve support to Hickory High School by serving the student/faculty population and bridging the gap between school and home. Within the school, we work closely with Hickory Administrators, the Director of Student Activities and the Athletic Director to promote a unified school community. Recognized for 4 years in a row as a National PTA School of Excellence (2016-2020) and recipient of numerous awards from the Virginia PTA, Southeastern District PTA and Chesapeake Council PTA, we would love to have you join our team.
Hickory High School PTSA is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization, and is a subcharter of the Chesapeake Council PTA, Southeastern District PTA, Virginia PTA and National PTA. Because of this, $3.75 of your $7.00 dues is directly sent to National/Virginia PTA. For the sixth year in a row, PTSA dues remain the same, and we kindly ask you to consider a tax-deductible Direct Donation. With your continued support, we are able to provide the following activities at Hickory High School.
HAWKS NEST SCHOOL STORE
The PTSA-run Hawks Nest School Store, located in the Cafeteria, was established in November 2015 and has since become the PTSA's largest source of revenue. Parent volunteers manage the store every day during lunch, providing a much-needed service and daily PTSA presence on campus. This year, the Hawks Nest will be co-Chaired by Elisabeth Marchetti and April Prest. Volunteer here.
We LOVE our Staffulty, and throughout the school year, starting with the Back-to-School lunch in late August, the PTSA regularly hosts teacher appreciation events. Let us know if you are able to volunteer and/or donate, and we'll be sure to add your name to the PTSA's Sign Up Genius. Pictured above are our volunteers at the 5th Annual Pi/Pie Day celebration on Friday, March 13, 2020.
SPRING ARTISAN CRAFT SHOW
Since its debut in 2016, PTSA's Spring Artisan Craft Show has grown from 75 vendors to over 120. All proceeds benefit scholarships for graduating Hickory Seniors, with the PTSA awarding $18,000 in the past four years. Second Vice President, Stephanie Alley, is overseeing her third Annual Craft Show this year, which will take place on March 28, 2020. Check out our Facebook page for the most current information.
TEACHER AND CLUB GRANTS
With this initiative, our goal is to supplement unfunded requirements for faculty/staff and clubs. Grants have included classroom books for the new AP Seminar course, a nurse's emergency kit for active threat response and emergency supplies for students, and aid to every department at Hickory High School. Pictured above is Mrs. Williams's Public Speaking Class at Southeastern Elementary, using grant funds to purchase teaching aids.
Volunteer Opportunities is something that we take seriously, and our team is working each and every day to make your volunteer experience a valuable one. Please contact us to learn more about volunteer opportunities. We would especially like to welcome and encourage 9th grade parents and guardians to get involved. Four years of high school goes by quickly.
SCHOOL PROJECTS AND PROGRAMS
The PTSA has positively impacted Hickory High School in many ways. Our contributions include: EIGHT Elkay EZH20 bottle-filler stations, a portable sound system, bistro tables and seating, a security desk, school signage at the entrance and stadium pressbox (with help from HMS PTSA and Creative Retail Works), hand sanitzer stations, and industrial fans/chair dollies for the custodians. We are always striving to make a difference, and invite you to learn more and lend your support.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
Volunteers are the driving force behind our organization, but do not despair if you're unable to volunteer your time. You CAN help by: joining the PTSA, donating to a teacher appreciation event, linking up your merchant rewards cards, and/or attending our monthly meetings. We also welcome tax-deductible donations to supplement our operating budget.
JOIN THE PTSA
Join now and become a member of Hickory High's PTSA - $7/individual or $30/family. Seniors must be HHS PTSA members to apply for one of many PTA/PTSA scholarships. Monthly raffle drawings are awarded to a faculty member, Senior and non-Senior student. Welcome to this year's new Membership Chair, Victoria Frerichs!
Many volunteer opportunities exist, some recurring and others one-time. We welcome all parents and guardians to be actively involved, whether it be in the Hawks Nest School Store or at one of many Teacher Appreciation events throughout the year. Students can also earn NHS hours.
LINK IT UP
Our PTSA has earned over $8000 in Merchant Rewards programs, such as Harris Teeter's Together in Education, Kroger's Community Rewards, Amazon Smile and Papa John's Pizza for Dough. Link your Harris Teeter VIC card to HHS #6941 by clicking below, signing into your account (or make a new one), and we earn free money each time you purchase HT-brand products. Contact us to see how you can help.
We need volunteers to help spread some HAWK cheer to anyone in our Hickory district - from graduating Seniors to li'l Hawks. If you are unable to volunteer during normal working hours, then this job is for you! Make it a fun, family affair or invite your friends to help plant surprise "Hawks" in your favorite Hawk fan's yard.
